LOCAL HISTORIAN
A Wortham resident recently completed an MA in Medieval History with the University of East Anglia. His thesis investigated the Manorial Records of Wortham held by Chicago University Library, who digitised the Rentals for 1434. He transposed and translated these from the original Latin script and also translated the Rentals for 1286. The title is: A Translation and Preliminary Analysis of the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds' Survey of Wortham, 1434: and a Translation of the Entry for Wortham in the Pinchbeck Register, 1286.
The records revealed and holdings of the various lessees who held their land from the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds - with clues as to their locations by reference to the churches and roads. The rentals showed among other information, how serfdom had declined over the period 1286 to 1434 and how former serfs were increasing their holdings by buying leases from others.
Further research is now being undertaken in to Wortham's manorial records over the centuries
